Early last spring, Grandpa Duff invited all of the grandkids to his house and presented them each with a pumpkin seed. They each planted them in a small cup and some potting soil, and took them home. The kids watched as their pumpkins sprouted, then grew one, then two leaves. The little plants were leaning out of their

cups by May 1st, when the time came to plant them in grandpa's garden. Each child decorated their own stake to show where their pumpkin plant was. As the weeks and months went by, we visited the garden to see the plants grow larger, blooms appear, and then small green pumpkins began to grow. All the while, grandpa was

fertilizing, cutting, and pinching to maximize the growth. Every time we came to see the pumpkins, they were noticeably bigger. The kids loved to see their own plant produce big, then large, then huge pumpkins.

Last Friday afternoon, the time came to pick the pumpkins. It took two grown men and a four wheeler to haul them onto our trailer. The kids had fun climbing all over them. Saturday morning, the boys brought them to Bountiful to weigh them. Our largest was 495 lbs. That is one big pumpkin. Jason came home and put them on our porch for fall decoration. I don't think we have to worry about teenagers stealing them. They'd throw out their backs before they managed to throw one into the street.

I think this was such a neat thing for their grandpa (Jason's dad) to do for them. It took quite an effort on his part, and we are grateful for that. It provided the kids with cool pumpkins, an appreciation for growing things, and a closer relationship with their grandpa. Hurray for Grandpa Duff! And Hurray for Gigantic Pumpkins!!!

I cannot believe how HUGE those were. poor Zander looked like he was lost in the biggest pumpkin patch ever. Tell all those kids they are fabulous farmers. It is a nice grandpa thing to do.
